چکیده

Non-destructive testing (NDT) by active infrared thermography requires of data processing techniques in order to: i. improve the thermal contrast between defective and non-defective areas, and ii. reduce the large quantity of images recorded during the inspection without losing relevant information. In this paper, the use of the skewness statistic parameter is proposed for the automatic processing of thermographic sequences obtained by active thermography. The main interest is to compress data from a 3D thermogram sequence to a unique skewness parameter image containing all the relevant information about the subsurface defects. Experimental thermographic data from three CFRP specimens with different surface shape (planar, curved and trapezoidal), containing 25 artificial defects (Teflon ® inserts) at different depths and having several sizes, have been processed using the skewness parameter. The results presented herein demonstrate the potential of this technique for automatic defect detection by active thermography.

A combined three-dimensional digitisation and subsurface defect detection data using active infrared thermography

In recent years, NonDestructive Testing (NDT) systems have been upgraded with three-dimensional information. Indeed, combine the three-dimensional and thermal information allows a more meaningful analysis. In the literature, the data for NDT and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction analysis are commonly acquired from independent systems. However, the use of two such systems leads to error anal...

Automatic Detection and Quantification of Incomplete Penetration in TIG Welding Through Segmentation and Morphological Image Processing of Thermographs

Infrared Thermography is an advanced Non Destructive Evaluation technique based on the detection of infrared radiation. It is best suited for online weld monitoring to produce defect free welds. The most important step involved in online weld monitoring is to develop an automated algorithm for weld defect detection and quantification. Incomplete Penetration occurs when penetration of the weld m...

Quantification by Signal to Noise Ratio of Active Infrared Thermography Data Processing Techniques

In this paper, the use of a signal to noise ratio (SNR) is proposed for the quantification of the goodness of some selected processing techniques of thermographic images, such as differentiated absolute contrast, skewness and kurtosis based algorithms, pulsed phase transform, principal component analysis and thermographic signal reconstruction. A new hybrid technique is also applied (PhAC—Phase...

Detection of Subsurface Defects using Active Infrared Thermography

Active infrared thermography is a widely used technique in the field of nondestructive testing. The subsurface defects produce non-uniform heat dissipation and this phenomenon is captured by an infrared camera. The phase image gives a prominent description of the defects which are not visible in the captured image sequence. The effect of non-uniform heating and the variation in surface emissivi...
